Local Guide

Florida Manatees

Gentle giants of the Sunshine State

Manatees, also known as sea cows, are iconic residents of Floridas warm coastal waters and springs. These gentle, slow-moving mammals are beloved for their friendly nature and playful curiosity. Florida is home to the largest population of manatees in the United States, especially in places like Crystal River, Blue Spring, and Homosassa Springs.

Manatees spend their days grazing on seagrass and floating peacefully. They are protected by law, and visitors are encouraged to observe them respectfully. If youre lucky, you might spot a manatee while kayaking, boating, or swimming in Floridas clear waters.

Fun Fact: Manatees can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes and have no natural predators. Their biggest threats are boat strikes and cold weather, so conservation efforts are vital to their survival.
